It’s NOT ABOUT YOU Founder, Blake Griffin, explores how overzealous coaches and parents actually compromise the benefits of competitive sports for kids.
The Negative Impact of Overzealous Coaches and Parents
Overzealous coaches and parents can unintentionally create a toxic environment for young athletes. Constant pressure and negativity can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a loss of passion for the sport, undermining the very benefits of teamwork, discipline and confidence that athletes are meant to foster.
Guided Help
Just a few changes can help reframe how adults approach youth sports and help kids enjoy participation and develop into competitive athletes..
Remember the bigger picture: Youth sports are about learning teamwork, resilience, building confidence and competing in a positive environment.
Use calming techniques: Deep breathing, counting to five, or stepping away from the sidelines can prevent emotional and violent outbursts.
Parents who regulate their own stress foster healthy coping skills for their children.
Encourage, don’t criticize. Replace “why did you miss that?” with “keep trying, you can do this.”
Positive language builds confidence and keeps the atmosphere supportive.
Respect boundaries: Avoid arguing with referees or second -guessing coaches. Demonstrating respect when mistakes are made, teaches kids to handle authority and setbacks gracefully.
Create a safe space: Ask kids how they felt or what they thought they could do differently. Give them time to reflect on their own performance.
Waiting 24 hours before giving feedback allows emotions to settle and makes conversations more constructive.
